In the Twin Cities metro, some 56,000 unemployed job seekers are competing for 54,000 job openings, according to the most recent Job Vacancy Survey from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development.
Of the six Minnesota planning regions, the Twin Cities metro is the only region with a 1-to-1 ratio between job seekers and job openings.
The survey also reveals that 45 percent of all metro job openings are in six low-wage occupations—food preparation and serving, sales, production, personal care and service, janitorial, and health care support. The openings in these occupations have a combined median wage of $11.75 per hour.
Other findings for the Twin Cities include:
- Only 43 percent of all openings require education or training beyond high school.
- Only 27 percent of all openings require a four-year degree.
- The median wage for all openings is $14.70 per hour.
DEED’s Cost of Living report shows that in a metro family of three with both parents working full-time, each worker must earn $16.85 per hour to meet basic needs.
