Machinists fall short in election at Delta Air Lines

The board counted ballots cast over the past several weeks and said 53 percent of the workers who voted opposed a union. A total of 10,593 votes were cast: 5,569 "no" votes, 4,909 votes for the Machinists and 115 write-in and silent votes. There were 13,104 workers eligible to vote in the election.

In a short statement on its website, the union said it “is investigating allegations of widespread illegal election interference by Delta Air Lines.”

Delta management touted the results as evidence that “tens of thousands of Delta employees continue to reaffirm the importance of maintaining the generations-old set of values set forth by our founder C.E. Woolman."

The announcement was the second blow for unions at Delta this month. On Nov. 3, the National Mediation Board announced the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA had narrowly lost its campaign to represent flight attendants at the airline.

Delta employees continue voting in two remaining representation elections as a result of Delta\’s merger with the former Northwest. Results for stock clerks and supply attendant employees will be announced Nov. 22. Results for reservation sales and cargo agents will be announced Dec. 7.
