Workday Magazine (https://workdaymagazine.org/machinists-lodge-459-celebrates-100th-anniversary/)

Capitol City and Minneapolis Metal Workers Lodge 459, a local of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, celebrated its 100th anniversary at a party June 15.

The union is one of only 86 locals of the Machinists nationwide to reach the century mark, IAM General Vice President Alex Bay said in congratulating Lodge 459 and its members.

Lodge 459 was chartered on May 30, 1901, in St. Paul. It had 80 charter members. Over the years, the union has represented workers at many major companies, including American Hoist & Derrick, Union Brass, Waterous Company, Plastics, Inc., and Stroh Brewing, among others. For decades, Lodge 459 also represented automobile mechanics, but in 1946 they split off into a separate local.

Two of Lodge 459's most esteemed members were Don Pilla and Bruce Vento.

Pilla was on the picketline in 1979 at Plastics, Inc., during a strike when he was struck by a truck and killed. The non-union driver rolled through the picketline and ran over Pilla. His death resulted in the passage of a state law mandating that drivers must bring their vehicles to a complete stop before driving through a picketline.

The U.S. Labor Voices Opposing Military Aid to Israel

This article was jointly produced by Workday Magazine and In These Times. As the Israeli military relentlessly bombards 2.4 million Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip and a ground invasion appears imminent, one storied, national union — the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America (UE) — is opposing U.S. military aid for the state of Israel whose assault on the besieged strip has already taken the lives of at least 1,800 Palestinians (a number that is quickly rising) and displaced more than 420,000 others.
