Many workers skip vacations, study finds

Despite working more hours than any other industrialized country, American workers are not taking the time off they need, reports a new study by Oxford Health Plans, Inc. And their health is at risk.

“This survey is a wake up call for Americans to realize that taking a vacation is not frivolous behavior. It’s essential to staying healthy,” said Alan Muney, M.D., vice president of Oxford. “Regular vacations are preventive medicine–they cut down on stress-related illness and save health care dollars.”

One out of six American workers don’t use up their annual vacation time, even though workers are more stressed out on the job than even before, the survey showed. Nearly 34 percent say they have no down time at work. Over 32 percent say they work and eat lunch at the same time. And 19 percent say their job makes them feel older than they are.
