Massetti remembered as ‘epitome of a unionist’

Services will be held Friday for John Massetti, a leader of the Machinists union and activist in the labor movement, who died Sunday after a battle with cancer.

Massetti served 20 years as secretary-treasurer of I.A.M. District 143, which represents airline workers, and was retired after working 38 years at Northwest Airlines. He was a longtime delegate to Minnesota AFL-CIO conventions and active in many ways in the labor movement at the state and local levels.

“John was the epitome of a unionist,” said Bobby DePace, President/Directing General Chair of District 143.

Massetti dedicated his life to the IAM and District 143 and his volunteer efforts for Guide Dogs of America are renowned, the union said.

Guide Dogs of America provides guide dogs and instruction in their use, free of charge, to blind and visually impaired men and women from the United States and Canada. Massetti helped to raise thousands of dollars for the organization, most notably through the annual “Hawgs for Dogs” motorcycle ride for Harley Davidson enthusiasts.

“John was one of the first labor leaders I got to know when I moved to Minnesota,” said Howard Kling, director of the University of Minnesota Labor Education Service and video producer.

“He dragged me along to film the first Hawgs for Dogs ride ? we videotaped several ? and we’ve been friends ever since.”

Massetti served for several years on the Labor Education Service advisory committee. “We will miss his wise counsel and wonderful sense of humor,” Kling said. “John was that rare person who was warm and caring with everyone around him while also working on issues that had national and global significance.”

In the late 1980s, Massetti was among a group of union members, which also included the late Auto Worker Bob Killeen, who promoted greater international solidarity. They led an effort to challenge the national AFL-CIO’s positions on Central America and to support independent, progressive unions.

Massetti is survived by his wife, Mary; son, Michael Massetti; mother, Aida Massetti; stepdaughter, Candice Pearson; and many relatives and friends. A celebration of his life will be held Friday, Dec. 9, at 6:30 p.m. at the Cremation Society of Minnesota Edina Chapel, 7110 France Ave., S., with visitation from 5 to 9 p.m. that evening.
