This year's Midwest School for Women Workers, entitled, 'From Sweatshops to Solidarity: Leave No Sister Behind!' brings together organized women from across the Midwest.
Hosted by the Institute for Labor Studies at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and Columbia, the conference will be held July 22-27 on the campus of the University of Missouri in Kansas City.
Participants will attend a series of classes, including: Women in Labor History; Union Organizing; Collective Bargaining; Labor Law; Grievance Handling; When Does it Trickle Down to Me; Ergonomics; and Leading by Example. A tour of the Watkins Woolen Mill is also planned.
Speakers will include Karen Nussbaum of the AFL-CIO Working Women's Department, Coalition of Labor Union Women President Gloria Johnson and women workers from Mexican maquiladora factories.
Cost of the six-day conference is: $450 for dorm residents and $325 for commuters. Limited scholarships are available. All fees include meals, workshops, and materials. Registration deadline is June 29. For further information and brochures, call The Institute for Labor Studies at 816-235-1470.
