The 'Guns and Hoses' benefit sponsored by local police and fire unions has raised more than $100,000 for families of victims of September's terrorist attacks in New York City, and money is still coming in.
'We had great weather and great results,' said Dick Leitner, president of St. Paul Firefighters Local 21. 'We're very, very happy.'
The outdoor fund-raiser took place Nov. 11 in the parking lots of O'Gara's Bar and Grill and Liberty State Bank, at Snelling and Selby Avenues. Events included a parade, a booya cook-off between police and fire departments, football games on large-screen TVs inside a beer tent, an auction, and a night-time benefit concert featuring four Twin Cities bands. Total attendance was estimated at 10,000-12,000.
'We didn't know what to expect,' Leitner said. 'But it was a very manageable crowd, a very friendly crowd.
'The booya event went off like we originally planned, then the crowd rolled over and we did the band thing. It was a fabulous party.'
Donations still can be sent through Nov. 30 to: Guns and Hoses, PO Box 64075, St. Paul, MN 55164. T-shirts from the event can be ordered by calling Local 21 at 651-293-1187.
Proceeds are being divided proportionally between police and fire relief funds for victims' families, Leitner said.
According to the International Union of Police Associations, 63 police officers from the New York City Police Department, Port Authority of New York, New Jersey Police Department, and New York Office of Court Administration died at the World Trade Center. A total of 347 Fire Department of New York personnel died in the attacks and rescue efforts, according to the International Association of Fire Fighters. They include 344 members from IAFF Locals 94 and 854, Chaplain Mychal Judge and two EMTs, who were AFSCME members.
