The Duluth Central Labor Body, AFL-CIO, Machinists Lodge 459 in St. Paul and AFSCME Local 3800 in Minneapolis have passed resolutions opposing war in Iraq, joining scores of other labor organizations from around the country who have spoken out.
In its resolution, the Duluth Central Labor Body "goes on record as strenuously opposing the Bush administration's march toward war with Iraq without the direction of the United Nations" and resolved to urge "its members and affiliates to get involved with organizations working toward stopping the trigger happy Texan's march toward war with Iraq."
The resolution passed unanimously at the central body's November meeting. The local labor council represents some 15,000 union members in Duluth.
Machinists Lodge 459 also passed a resolution unanimously, member Wayne Wittman reported. The resolution was introduced by the Machinists District 77 Retirees Union, which also had passed the measure on a unanimous vote.
Wittman said the group plans to forward its action to the St. Paul Trades & Labor Assembly's December meeting, to the Minnesota AFL-CIO Retiree Council and to the Minnesota Senior Federation.
The Machinists' resolution opposes "any military actions in Iraq no specifically sanctioned and authorized by the United Nations."
The AFSCME resolution notes that "the past 12 years of U.S. bombing and sanctions on Iraq have resulted in dire shortages of food and medicine and contributed to the deaths of over 1 million Iraqis, including 500,000 children" and says an extension of this war would cause many more deaths among both Iraqis and Americans.
The union said that a military buildup will mean the loss of funding for many social programs such as education, health care and housing. Local 3800 represents clerical workers at the University of Minnesota.
Other labor organizations across the country that have passed anti-war resolutions include:
- The Wisconsin SEIU Representative Assembly
- Teamsters Local 705, based in Chicago, the second-largest Teamsters local in the United States
- The Rochester, New York, Labor Council
- SEIU Local 250, a 60,000-member health care union in northern California
- Hotel Employees & Restaurant Employees Local 5 in Hawaii
- California Federation of Teachers State Council
- The Executive Council of Local 1199/SEIU, New York City
- The Albany, New York, Central Federation of Labor
- Washington State Labor Council, a state AFL-CIO federation
- The San Francisco Labor Council
- The United Electrical, Radio, and Machine Workers, a national union
