While the World Trade Organization (WTO) meets behind military blockades in Cancun, Mexico, for its Fifth Ministerial Summit, citizens in Minnesota and across the world will be protesting in solidarity with the activists who have made the trip to Mexico.
The Minneapolis event will take place Friday, Sept. 12, starting 11:30 a.m. at Peavey Plaza, between 11th and 12th streets and Nicollet. Participants will march from the plaza.
Organizers say the WTO is an undemocratic international organization that undermines the sovereignty of citizens in countries around the world. It has the power to turn back hard-won environmental, worker rights and other regulations.
Endorsers of the protest event include Danza Mexica Cuautemoc, Resource Center of the Americas, Minnesota Fair Trade Coalition, Arise! Bookstore and Resource Center and North Country Co-op.
