The Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II – whose “Moral Mondays” campaign has spread from North Carolina to other states – leads a March for Equity on Saturday, Aug. 16, in downtown Minneapolis.
The march begins at 10 a.m. at Peavey Plaza and heads up Nicollet Mall to the Hennepin County Library.
Saturday’s demonstration is part of a series of events sponsored by Minneapolis Federation of Teachers Local 59. In the Twin Cities, faith, labor, and community partners are pulling together to overcome some of the worst racial disparities in the nation.
“The Minneapolis Federation of Teachers is proud to stand in the front lines of the fight for social justice and equality,” the union said.
“Children who live in better situations – with good homes to live in, with parents who have good, high-paying jobs –are in better position to learn and excel for their futures. The ‘opportunity gap’ will close. Our whole society will be better, but it will start from within.
“We believe that Reverend Barber’s visit will invigorate our efforts to move forward . . . “
Barber electrified delegates to the recent conventions of AFSCME and the American Postal Workers Union. His “Moral Monday” demonstrations advance social justice and equality for all.
