Two movies about union organizing - one real, one based on real events - will be featured as part of two film discussion series this week.
* 'Bread and Roses,' Ken Loach's feature film inspired by SEIU's Justice for Janitors campaign in Los Angeles, will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 17 at the Resource Center of the Americas, 3019 Minnehaha Ave. South.
The film tells the story of a young Mexican immigrant, her older sister, the exploitation they face as undocumented workers, and how a union organizing drive changes their lives. The event is free; the bilingual film has both English and Spanish subtitles, as appropriate. Discussion, in Spanish, will follow.
* 'Live Nude Girls Unite' is the next feature in the Working Class Studies Movie Series, sponsored by the Labor Education Service at the University of Minnesota.
The documentary tells the story of a group of peep-show dancers who attempt to organize a union, raising a variety of questions about workers' rights, the sex industry and feminism. As you might expect, the film contains nudity and other adult content, so find a baby-sitter.
The movie is free, and begins at 7 p.m. Jan. 18 in Room 1-136 of the Carlson School of Management building, 312 19th Ave. South, on the university's West Bank. Discussion will follow.
From the Jan. 16, 2002, issue of The Union Advocate newspaper. Used by permission. The Union Advocate is the official publication of the St. Paul Trades and Labor Assembly. E-mail The Advocate at: advocate@mtn.org
