NLRB orders new election at Minnesota Beef

Roughly 125 workers at Minnesota Beef Industries in Buffalo Lake will vote again Sept. 24 on whether to join United Food & Commercial Workers Local 789.

Workers rejected a union by a 2-1 margin in May, but the National Labor Relations Board threw out those results and ordered a new election, saying anti-union tactics used by company representatives made a fair election impossible. Local 789 charged that managers threatened to dismiss or deport workers, many of whom are immigrants.

The union sponsored a picnic for workers on Sept. 18, but otherwise is running a low-key campaign, said Local 789 president Don Seaquist.
