Two unions - the United American Nurses, and the California School Employees Association
The nurses group is the collective bargaining wing of the American Nurses Association and has 100,000 members. The California group has 125,000.
Most of the attention was focused on the nurses, since nurses nationwide are part of several other unions, such as the American Federation of Teachers and the Service Employees. AFT President Sandra Feldman welcomed UAN.
"Nurses say union representation is the most effective way to address issues affecting patient care, including adequate staffing levels, a ban on mandatory overtime, proper training and decent salaries," Feldman said. "This is extremely significant."
UAN Director Susan Bianchi-Sand said her group looks forward to being part of the labor federation. Their affiliation "unites staff nurses across the country with the 13 million working women and men of the largest labor organization," she added.
The Minnesota Nurses Association is an active member of UAN. MNA member Jeanne Surdo is UAN secretary-treasurer and MNA member Walter Frederickson is a UAN director.
