OccupyMN to celebrate three-year anniversary

Three years ago, the Occupy movement mobilized thousands of people and re-shaped the public debate over wealth and inequality. On Tuesday, OccupyMN will celebrate the anniversary with events in Minneapolis.

Activities include an afternoon of sign-holding at The People’s Plaza (Hennepin County Government Center Plaza, 300 S. 6th St., Minneapolis), dinner and meet-up at the 4200 Cedar community space and a late evening activist gathering.

Here is the schedule:

3-5 p.m. – Sign Holding at The People’s Plaza (Bring your sign!)
6-9 p.m. – Dinner and Meeting at 4200 Cedar Ave. S., Minneapolis
Late night – Gathering to be held, location TBA during dinner meeting.

“Join like-minded people, including representatives from local community organizations, to show the world that you’re still angry, and to discuss ways we can fight back against corporations,” organizers said. People may RSVP at Facebook.

On September 17, 2011, the Occupy movement started in New York City when demonstrators began protests on Wall Street against “The 1%” who used their money and influence to control the economy and government. The demonstrators rallying cry was “We are the 99%.”

The movement quickly spread around the country and the world. In the Twin Cities, protestors occupied the Hennepin County Government Center plaza, which they dubbed “The People’s Plaza,” for several weeks. Groups also formed in numerous other Minnesota communities, including Duluth, Grand Rapids, Rochester, Fergus Falls, Bemidji, Alexandra and Fargo-Moorhead.
