PACE union to push national health care

Adopting the late Tony Mazzochi’s last big cause as its own, the Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical and Energy Workers (PACE) will push single-payer national health insurance, union President Boyd Young’s top aide says.

‘In President Young’s view, the work’ by Mazzochi ‘that touches his heart the most was agitating for national health care for every man, woman and child,’ said Young’s executive assistant, Leeann Anderson.

‘National health care is a cause that President Young and PACE intend to carry forward in his memory,’ she told a large crowd at the AFL-CIO for a Dec. 9 memorial service.

Mazzochi, 76, and a New York native, died Oct. 5 in Washington of pancreatic cancer. He was a 52-year member and leader, including legislative director, of PACE and especially its predecessor, the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers.

In that post, Mazzochi virtually single-handedly created and helped push the Occupational Safety and Health Act through Congress. And he publicized OCAW member Karen Silkwood’s exposure of nuclear power hazards before her still-unexplained death.

‘Tony will be with us as we build better safety programs, agitate for national health care and as we organize,’ just as he was while alive, Anderson said.

Besides OSHA and health care, Mazzochi, fed up with Democrats’ inaction and compromises, founded the Labor Party, whose backers view it as a platform for progressive ideas.

‘Tony saw in the health care crisis a real opportunity,’ said Mark Dudzic, president of Mazzochi’s old local on Long Island. Mazzochi said ‘market-based solutions had proven their inadequacy and everything that single-payer advocates predicted 10 years ago has come to pass.

‘The only thing stopping single-payer health care at this point is the lack of political will,’ the PACE unionist added.

The AFL-CIO service was the second one for Mazzochi in D.C., following a Dec. 8 overflow crowd of 250-plus family and friends sponsored by the Labor Party. Speakers stressed his commitment to working men and women, his leadership of their struggles, and his sense of urgency.
