Panel to recall AFL-CIO merger, discuss labor’s future

It has been 50 years since the American Federation of Labor merged with the Congress of Industrial Organizations to form the largest labor federation in U.S. history.

Four Minnesota labor leaders who were closely involved in the merger will speak Monday, May 23, as part of the “Untold Stories” labor history series. The program will start at 7 p.m. at the St. Paul Labor Centre, 411 Mahoney (aka Main Street), St. Paul. It is free and open to the public.

Speakers will be former Minnesota CIO President and Minnesota AFL-CIO Executive Vice President Bob Hess; former Building Trades officer Dick Radman; former Minnesota AFL-CIO President Dave Roe; and former Minnesota AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Neil Sherburne. St. Paul Trades & Labor Assembly President Shar Knutson will moderate.

The panelists will provide a behind-the-scenes look at the merger and what history and experience might tell us as the AFL-CIO goes through possible restructuring this year.

A reception sponsored by the Ramsey County Historical Society will follow the program.

The “Untold Stories” labor history month series is sponsored by The Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library and co-sponsored by many labor and educational organizations. The May 23 program is being held in conjunction with the St. Paul Labor Speakers Club.
