A Minneapolis Steelworker who faces possible jail time for protesting at the former School of the Americas will speak at a program Jan. 11 at the CWA Local 7200 hall in Minneapolis.
The program will be Tuesday, Jan. 11, at 7 p.m. at the CWA Local 7200 hall, 3521 East Lake St., Minneapolis. It is free and open to the public.
Elizabeth Nadeau, an associate member of the Steelworkers union, was arrested Nov. 21 for engaging in nonviolent civil disobedience at the school, now called the "Western Hemisphere Institute of Security Cooperation" in Fort Benning, Ga. She faces a possible three to six months in prison for trespassing on the facility.
Some 16,000 people participated in the demonstration to demand the closing of the school, which trains Latin American soldiers, paramilitary and police forces. Its graduates have gone on to lead death squads and conduct repression in their home countries.
In addition to Nadeau, panelists will include former prisoners of conscience Greg Poferl of the American Postal Workers Union and Rita Steinhagen of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet; and Gerardo Cajamarca, Colombian human rights activist. Todd Erickson, Communications Workers of America and Veterans for Peace member, will moderate.
Participants also are invited to take part in an action the following day to call attention to the School of the Americas. On Wednesday, Jan. 12, starting at 11:45 a.m., volunteers will hand out leaflets in the Minneapolis skyways. They will meet inside at the street level entrance of the TriTech building at 2nd Ave. S. and 4th St. S. at 11:45 am. This is the North East corner of the intersection across from Kieran's.
