Details of events in Cloquet
The 82nd Annual Cloquet Labor Day Celebration began Thursday, Aug. 30, and runs through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 3. The celebration includes a daily carnival, from noon to 11 p.m., in Dunlap Island Park. Organizers note this is a change in location from past years due to the construction work being done on Avenue B.
The carnival will feature a midway produced by Rogers Brothers Funland Shows. Carnival goers can purchase wristbands, good for an unlimited number of rides during specific times. The wristbands sell for $12.
A Horseshoe Tournament will be held in Wright in the City Park on Saturday, Sept. 1. It features a division for non-league throwers as well as a division for league throwers. There will be prizes and trophies for the top four place finishers for both singles and doubles events and for both league and non-league divisions. The entry fee for each event is $5 per person and the tournament will be a round robin competition.
For more information regarding the Horseshoe Tournament, call Leonard Aho in Tamarack at 218-768-3514 or Mike Berthiaume in Cloquet at 218-879-7036.
On Saturday, Sept. 1, and Sunday, Sept. 2, a Softball Tournament will be held at Pinehurst Park and Braun Field in Cloquet. The tournament will begin at 8 a.m. each day and run throughout the day. Concessions will be available at the Pinehurst Park location. For more information call Steve Martin at 218-879-3094.
Sunday, Sept. 2, brings the traditional Old Timer's Banquet beginning at 11 a.m. in the upstairs hall of the Cloquet Labor Temple located at 1403 Avenue C. The banquet features a free dinner for any retired Carlton County resident who has lived in the county for 50 years or more. Music prior to the dinner will be provided by Lorren Lindevig. After dinner a drawing will be held for a number of door prizes, and the oldest man, oldest woman, and longest married couple will be recognized. As always, seating is limited to the capacity of the hall.
Also on Sunday, Sept. 2, a fireworks display will be held at Veteran's Park in Cloquet beginning at 9 p.m. In case of rain or fog, the fireworks display will be held at 9 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 3.
The Celebration continues on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 3, starting at 11 a.m. with the annual Labor Day Parade. The parade will follow the usual Cloquet Avenue parade route with the exception that it will start at 18th Street and Cloquet Avenue and end at 8th Street and Cloquet Avenue. It will feature marching bands, floats, and many community and area organizations.
The festivities conclude on Labor Day with a free picnic lunch to be held immediately following the parade in the upstairs hall of the Cloquet Labor Temple. The lunch is free and open to the public.
Labor Day buttons will be available at all the events for $1. Button sales help defray the cost of the many events.
