Rally for public education set for May 20

Members of Education Minnesota and allies plan to rally for public education at the state Capitol on May 20, the final Saturday of the regular legislative session.

The rally, previously set to start at noon on the south lawn of Education Minnesota, 41 Sherburne Ave., St. Paul, has been moved, due to cold, rainy weather.  It will begin in the Capitol rotunda, gathering at 12:30 with a program start at 1 p.m. (The march from the Education Minnesota building to the Capitol is canceled.)  At about 2 p.m., the rally will conclude with the delivery to the governor’s office of about 1,000 handwritten notes from educators and other supporters of public education.

Minnesota has a projected surplus of $1.65 billion, but the Republican-controlled House and Senate are pushing education budgets that don’t even cover inflation, the union said. Educators are asking legislators and Governor Mark Dayton to:

  • Hold strong on funding public education.
  • Oppose lowering licensing standards for teachers.
  • Block attempts to offer back-door vouchers to private schools.
  • Resist proposals that limit access to higher education.
  • Stand up for the students on the margins who need public education the most.

Education Minnesota will provide busing for Education Minnesota members and their families to the rally in St. Paul from hubs in St. Cloud, Owatonna, Woodbury, Edina, Coon Rapids, Mankato, Rochester and Apple Valley. Learn more here.
