The rally will start at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 1, outside the Midway neighborhood Wal-Mart store, 1450 University Ave. W. Participants will call on the company to provide flexible, paid sick days for all employees.
The demonstration is part of a national campaign by ACORN calling on employers to provide paid sick days. About half of the private sector work force does not get any paid sick days. The same is true of about 75 percent of low-wage workers.
"Workers should not have to choose between going to work sick and neglecting care for themselves or family members," said ACORN member Peter Zeftel. "This is a family issue, as well as a health issue. The state should pass HF1334 and its companion bill in the Senate so that all employees have the right to accrue paid sick days."

Legislation also is pending in Congress to require employers to provide paid sick leave. The March 1 event is sponsored by ACORN and UFCW Local 789.
