The week of April 23, Americans will rally across the country to fight for affordable health care for all Wal-Mart workers. A Twin Cities event will be held Tuesday, April 25, at 4 p.m. outside Region's Hospital, 640 Jackson St., St. Paul.
The focus of the actions is to raise awareness about the health care crisis and sign the pledge to make Wal-Mart pay its fair share for health care. Despite over $1 billion in profits, Wal-Mart fails to provide company health care to 57 percent -- over 775,000 employees and their families. Taxpayers pick up the tab for the uninsured to the tune of $400 million a year, organizers said.
After the rally, supporters will take to the streets to sign up thousands of Americans to join the fight for health care by signing the "Cure the Wal-Mart Health Care Crisis" pledge.
The rallies are the first nationally coordinated actions involving the new Change to Win federation, which represents over 6 million workers. Organizer for the Twin Cities event is Jenny Shegos of UFCW Local 789. For more information, call her at 651-451-6240.
