Robbinsdale parents speak out on school bus safety

Parents and SEIU Local 284 bus drivers will speak out against privatization at 5:30 p.m. during the public comment period prior to the school board meeting at 7 p.m., at 4148 Winnetka Ave. N., New Hope.

"It’s a matter of safety and security for our children," says Tilly Gitchuway, a parent whose children have all attended Robbinsdale public schools and whose youngest is a senior in high school and rides the school bus to and from school each day. "It is hard enough, as a parent, to put your children on a school bus in the morning and entrust them to others. Our district’s current drivers are trained, tested and trustworthy and yet the school board wants to veer off toward privatization."

Research has shown that privatization of school bus service leads to lower quality of service, accountability problems that are difficult to monitor and fix, and long term dependency on outsourcing because schools sell their fleet of buses after they move to privatization. Comparative analysis over time shows districts have fewer cost savings than officials like to first predict.

A social cost of outsourcing is the erosion of the community’s employment base when good jobs are replaced by poor jobs or removed altogether.

"In this case, 130 SEIU bus drivers will lose their jobs and lower-paid drivers, with high turnover rates, will be employed in our place," says bus driver Jean Woznak, who has 20 years of bus driving experience and lives in the district she serves.

The drivers currently are represented by the Service Employees International Union,
