In a formal announcement June 19, the two unions said they formed merger working groups on various issues at a meeting at the National Labor College in Silver Spring, Md. But renewed interest in the merger of the two unions – who report a combined membership of just over 100,000 – started last October. The unions held “listening tours” on the issue with their members nationwide since then.
SAG and AFTRA proposed a merger, with AFL-CIO encouragement, several years ago, but members voted it down. Now, SAG President Ken Howard and AFTRA President Roberta Reardon want to submit a completed agreement to their members by January.
“I\'m glad you\'re revisiting the issue of bringing your unions together, and I applaud the way you approached the idea,” said AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka.
