Scouts get hands-on lesson in carpentry

More than 100 Girl Scouts learned about carpentry and construction careers at  workshops hosted by the North Central States Regional Council of Carpenters on Saturday.

The scouts, in grades 6-8, participated in demonstrations on aspects of carpentry, built their own projects and had the opportunity to ask tradeswomen questions about the construction industry. Twenty-five members of the carpenters union led the workshops.

The girls are members of the Girl Scouts of Minnesota and Wisconsin River Valleys council based in St. Paul. Participating in the workshop helped each girl earn her woodworking badge, which requires each scout to use a hammer, saw, level and screwdriver to complete a task. Final projects included birdhouses, jewelry holders and treasure boxes.

The North Central States Regional Council of Carpenters held this “Girls Build” event based on monthly “Kids Build” workshops that launched at the Training Center in September, before expanding to 11 more cities in the region.

Kids Build is a two-hour free carpentry workshop for children ages 5-12, where each child has the opportunity to build a project, decorate it and take it home. It is held the second Saturday of the month from 10 a.m.-noon, September-May. For more information, go to www.facebook.com/KidsBuildWorkshop.
