Series commemorates Labor History Month in May

Minnesota labor leaders, historic sites and the Willmar 8 strike are among the topics of the ‘Untold Stories’ series, sponsored by the Friends of the St. Paul Public Library to commemorate May as Labor History Month.

All programs take place in St. Paul, and are free and open to the public.

The series kicks off on May 8 with the dedication of Mahoney St. in front of the St. Paul Labor Centre. It is named for former mayor and longtime labor activist William Mahoney. A celebration, including the unveiling of honorary signs for ‘William Mahoney St.,’ will take place at 7:30 p.m. The evening-long celebration, in conjunction with the St. Paul Trades and Labor Assembly’s May meeting, will include food, refreshments and music.

Other events are:

* May 15, 7 p.m.: ‘Writing the Wrongs: Eva Valesh and the Rise of Labor Journalism,’ with author Elizabeth Faue, Macalester College Weyerhaueser Chapel, Grand Ave. west of Snelling. Faue will discuss the pivotal events that transformed the outspoken daughter of a working-class St. Paul family into a national political figure.

* May 18, 10 a.m.: Saint Paul Labor History Bus Tour, led by Dave Riehle, St. Paul Labor Centre, 411 Main St. The deadline for reservations is May 8; call 651-222-3242. Tour the sites where working people earned their living and struggled for a better life.

* May 21, 7 p.m.: ‘Remembering the Willmar 8,’ film and panel discussion, UAW-Ford-MnSCU Training Center at Twin Cities Assembly Plant, 966 S. Mississippi River Blvd. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Willmar 8, the historic strike made famous by the film of the same name. Hear from a striker and from others who supported the efforts of these brave women who fought for their rights as workers and as women.

* CANCELLED: May 22, 6:30 p.m.: ‘We Can’t Eat Prestige: The Women Who Organized Harvard,’ book discussion, Lori’s Coffeehouse, 1441 Cleveland Ave. Lisa Jordan of the University of Minnesota Labor Education Service will lead the discussion of the book by John Hoerr.

* May 30, 7 p.m.: ‘Claiming the City: Politics, Faith, and the Power of Place in Saint Paul,’ with author Mary Wingerd, Rice Street Branch Library, 1011 Rice St. Find out why Mary Wingerd’s fun and provocative book has been called the best thing ever written about St. Paul.
