Jim Holte, secretary-treasurer and principal officer of Teamsters Local 1145, died Sunday morning, June 23, after a long and courageous fight with cancer. He was 65.
Local 1145 represents workers at Honeywell and Alliant Tech Systems. Holte started his career at Honeywell in 1961 after service in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a plant steward and business agent before becoming president in 1984. In 1998 he became secretary-treasurer and also served as vice president of Teamsters Joint Council 32.
In the 2001 contract negotiations at Honeywell, Holte used the Internet to keep the members informed by posting the negotiation session minutes each day. The result was a strong contract with a 90+ percent acceptance. Members and friends said he will be missed by all Minnesota Teamsters but will be remembered as a skilled negotiator and dedicated trade unionist who always put the members first.
