The St. Paul Area Trades and Labor Assembly and UNITE!, the Union of Needletrades, Industrial and Textile Employees, are sponsoring an anti-sweatshop rally and protest at Uniforms Unlimited, 189 East 7th Place, St. Paul, at noon Wednesday, June 19.
The store currently holds the contract to supply uniforms for state corrections officers. At the end of April, the Assembly and several unions requested a meeting to talk with Uniforms Unlimited about providing union-made, American-made uniforms for state workers under a contract awarded to them by the State of Minnesota, instead of having them produced in overseas sweatshops.
'Those meeting requests were ignored,' Assembly President Shar Knutson said. 'If they don't want to meet and talk with us, then we will have to make them listen.'
Uniforms Unlimited is located between Jackson and Sibley streets in St. Paul. Because parking is very limited, the Assembly is encouraging participants to walk or car-pool if possible.
