A Minneapolis Steelworker who was one of 15 people arrested in protests at the former School of the Americas will report on her experiences Thursday, Dec. 9, in a program that is free and open to the public.
The program starts at 7 pm. Thursday at the offices of the United Steelworkers of America, 2829 University Ave., S.E., Minneapolis.
Elizabeth Nadeau, an undergraduate student of Anthropology and a member of the Steelworkers, was arrested for engaging in nonviolent civil disobedience at the school, now called the "Western Hemisphere Institute of Security Cooperation" in Fort Benning, Ga. She faces a possible three to six months in prison for trespassing on the facility.
Some 16,000 people participated in the demonstration on Nov. 21 to demand the closing of the school, which trains Latin American soldiers, paramilitary and police forces. Its graduates have gone on to lead death squads and conduct repression in their home countries.
Nadeau and four other Steelworkers, including Colombian labor activist Gerardo Cajamarca, will present a report and show a brief video about the school. They also will discuss an action plan for coming months.
