Federal mediators have called representatives of striking nurses and Allina Health back to the bargaining table, with a session set for Tuesday, Sept. 27, at a time and place to be determined.
Meanwhile, picketing by Minnesota Nurses Association members is continuing at five Allina facilities. On Friday evening, delegates to the AFSCME Council 5 convention joined striking nurses at Abbott Northwestern hospital in Minneapolis.
Nurses began an open-ended, unfair labor practice strike on Labor Day. The strike involves some 5,000 registered nurses at Abbott and the Phillips Eye Institute in Minneapolis, Unity Hospital in Fridley, Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids and United Hospital in St. Paul.
Council 5 Executive Director Eliot Seide said the attack on nurses and health care is the same kind of challenge facing other workers, including those represented by AFSCME.
MNA Executive Director Rose Roach said Allina is spending 10 times what it would cost to settle the contract on replacement nurses and other efforts to undermine the nurses’ campaign for improved patient care.
