Students highlight campaign for justice at Nike

In January 2009, two Honduran factories that produce apparel for Nike were closed without notice, putting 1,700 employees out of work. On October 8, 2009, the Workers Rights Consortium, an independent monitoring organization, issued a report highlighting Nike’s numerous code of conduct violations at the two factories. Collectively, the 1,700 workers are owed $2.2 million in back wages and unpaid severance.

Though the former employees were not employed directly by Nike, the company\’s own policy and the codes of conduct of universities state that Nike is, in fact, still responsible for making sure all of its subcontracted workers are paid, the students said. By continuing to refuse to pay its workers, Nike is in violation of its own code of conduct and those of universities with which it contracts, including the University of Minnesota, the students said.
