Donations are being sought now through “Give to the Max Day,” on Thursday for the Nellie Stone Johnson Scholarship Program, which helps students of color attending one of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities.
Tax-deductible contributions can be made here.
Nellie Stone Johnson, a long-time board member of the Minnesota State University System, was an organizer in the Hotel & Restaurant Employees Union and the first African-American elected to citywide office in Minneapolis. The endowment is a permanent reminder of her contributions to civil rights and human rights and her commitment to education.
The Scholarship Program’s monies come from private sources, including alumni, labor unions, company foundations, friends and other supporters. For the third year in a row, the program has a matching grant from its board of directors and labor leaders to double the impact of donations.
Next year marks the 30th year of the Nellie Stone Johnson Scholarship. The goal is to provide support for 30 students. Scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,200 are given each year to students who enroll in two-year, undergraduate or graduate programs.
