The 127 tech employees at Allina-owned Unity Hospital in Fridley have voted to join Service Employees International Union Local 113. The vote comes after the recent agreement between Allina and Local 113 for a new contract and strategic alliance to improve the delivery of health care in Minnesota.
Those employees voting to join SEIU Local 113 include licensed practical nurses (LPNs), surgery technicians, radiology technicians, respiratory therapists and other technical employees.
"We are all concerned about quality care and what's best for our patients," said Michelle Miller, a respiratory care practitioner at Unity and new member of Local 113. "Now we are part of the decision-making process and that's going to make a difference for our patients and our communities."
This is the first vote since the ratification of a new strategic alliance agreement, under which Allina Hospitals & Clinics has agreed to remain neutral regarding the efforts of its non-union employees to unite with SEIU Local 113. After voting in favor of joining Local 113, tech workers at Unity will form a committee of their coworkers to negotiate a new contract over the coming months.
"This vote is another example of how we are changing the way health care works," said Julie Schnell, president of SEIU Local 113. "We all want to do what's best for the community, and the new members at Unity voted today to become part of a greater vision for providing quality health care at Allina."
Allina and SEIU Local 113 last week announced their new contract and strategic alliance agreements that include a commitment to movement toward full employer-paid single and family health insurance, employment security, and a new workplace structure that makes Local 113 members part of the decision-making process in Allina hospitals.
"We?re committed to delivering quality health care for our patients and our communities," said Rickie Ressler, interim president of Unity Hospital. "With this decision by our tech employees, we look forward to forging a new relationship built on mutual trust that will improve patient care."
SEIU Local 113 includes more than 14,000 hospital, clinic and nursing home workers across Minnesota, including more than 6,000 Twin Cities hospital workers, 2,500 of whom work at Allina Hospitals & Clinics. SEIU unites nearly one million health care workers nationwide. For more information, go to www.togetherforqualitycare.org.
