Union members are spearheading three upcoming motorcycle rides that benefit good causes.
The Family Peace Ride on June 8 will support efforts by the Harriet Tubman Center and Family Violence Network to end domestic abuse. Riders will travel from St. Paul to Mankato to raise money for programs operated by the consolidated agency, including shelter for children and women trying to escape abusive situations.
The debut motorcycle ride, co-sponsored by the Minnesota AFL-CIO, will leave at 9 a.m. from St. Paul Harley-Davidson/Buell, 2899 Hudson Road. Registration is $15 for a single rider, $25 with a passenger. For information, call Ben Miller, of the Lakes and Plains Regional Council of Carpenters, 651-646-7207; or Dick Savard, of Machinists Lodge 459, 651-645-0211.
The Family Peace Ride joins two established union-sponsored motorcycle rides this summer that raise funds for community causes.
The DAD's Day Ride to Duluth takes place June 15. Riders are asked to meet by 9:30 a.m. at the Minnesota Laborers Training Center, 2350 Main St., Lino Lakes. Riders will leave en masse at 10 a.m.
Registration is $100 per bike, or a voluntary contribution. For information, or donation sheets whether or not you're riding, call Ralph A. Nash Jr., of Carpenters Local 1644, 651-271-1921; Ray Waldron, of the Minnesota AFL-CIO, 651-227-7647; or Dick Anfang, of the Minnesota Building and Construction Trades Council, 651-224-9445.
DAD's Day activities are part of a program of the AFL-CIO's Building and Construction Trades Department. Since it began in 1987, DAD - which stands for for Dollars Against Diabetes - has raised more than $14 million to pay for construction and research at the Diabetes Research Institute. The institute opened at the University of Miami School of Medicine in Florida in 1994.
The 13th annual Hawgs for Dogs motorcycle run takes place July 13-14 to raise money for Guide Dogs of America. This year's run leaves from Twin Cities Harley-Davidson in Blaine and travels 500 miles, with an overnight stay in Montreal, Wis. The fully supported ride includes equipment vans and chase vehicles.
Registration is $30 for drivers, $20 for passengers. In addition, each driver is required to raise a minimum of $300 in pledges.
Since its inception, Guide Dogs of America has helped more than 2,000 blind and visually handicapped men and women receive guide dogs and training free of charge.
