Members of Service Employees International Union Local 26 and allies will hold a contract convention in downtown Minneapolis at Block E, 7th St. and Hennepin Ave. Enter at the Gameworks entrance. Registration is at 11:30 a.m. with the event starting at noon.
“This is a critical year for our union that represents more than 4,000 janitors: the economy is bad and the companies have been trying their hardest to undermine the standards that janitors won with the communities’ support in our last contract fight in 2006,” the union said in announcing the event.
“We are also trying to take a stand for something new: a GREEN economy, where the way that downtown office towers are cleaned is consistent with our values of a healthy environment. The public launch of our campaign at our convention is a chance to take a stand for economic, racial, and environmental justice.”
Green solutions the workers are advocating include increasing the use of green cleaning products, recycling more trash and supporting the transition to day-shift cleaning that can reduce energy use in hundreds of buildings.
