Members of AFSCME Local 3800 and Teamsters Local 320 presented petitions to the office of University of Minnesota President Kaler on Tuesday, urging the administration to bargain fairly with the unions.
Local 3800 President Cherrene Horazuk and Local 320 Vice President and Business Agent Curt Swenson stated how dedicated frontline clerical, food and facilities staff are critical for student engagement and deserve more than the one percent raise over two years that the University has insisted upon.
The petitions, signed by staff, faculty and students, ask the administration "to treat all workers with raises and respect."
"We stated several times during negotiations on October 3 that the University is not bargaining in good faith and objected to the University's continuous engagement in Unfair Labor Practices related to regressive bargaining, surface bargaining, and the refusal to negotiate a mandatory of subject bargaining," Local 3800 states on its website.
Negotiations for the 2017-2019 contract between U of M AFSCME locals 3260, 3800, 3801, and 3937 and the University of Minnesota formally opened on May 17. The locals represent hundreds of clerical, technical and other frontline employees.
The University also has been in lengthy contract talks with Local 320, which represents maintenance, food service and other workers.
