In a recent Wall Street Journal opinion article, Mackey argued against current legislation in Congress to expand health care coverage to all Americans and reduce skyrocketing health care costs. Instead, he outlined a series of proposals, including repealing government mandates on what insurance companies must cover and reducing patients’ ability to sue in cases of medical malpractice. He said more people could receive health care by encouraging people with health insurance to make tax-deductible contributions to help those without insurance.

The UFCW said Mackey’s ideas would “undermine meaningful health care reform,” adding “For UFCW members, health care reform is a top legislative priority. UFCW members around the country are organizing and mobilizing their communities in support of comprehensive health care reform.”
