Union drive among graduate student workers falls short

“Many many graduate assistants at the University of Minnesota wanted a union, and continue to want a union,” the Graduate Student Workers Union, a division of the United Auto Workers, said in a statement posted on its website.

“We stand in solidarity with them and look forward to the continued fight to build a more just and equitable workplace here and elsewhere.

“Thank you once again to all of the volunteers who worked so hard.”

Balloting among the 4,400 graduate assistants, who perform important teaching, research and other jobs, was held in several locations on the Twin Cities and Duluth campuses last week.

The election followed a two-year union drive by the GSWU-UAW.
