Union leader named a ‘newsmaker’ of the year

The Minnesota Women’s Press has named Jaye Rykunyk, principal officer of Hotel Employees & Restaurant Employees Local 17, one of the ‘newsmakers’ of 2000.

In its latest issue, the newspaper recognized Rykunyk and nine other newsmakers as ‘Minnesotans whose actions in the public arena promoted equality, justice and self-determination for women and girls.’

Rykunyk led the strike by more than 1,000 hotel workers in Minneapolis and Bloomington last summer. The 13-day walkout resulted in significant gains in wages and benefits – and contract language providing more respect for workers on the job.

Sixty percent of workers in the hospitality industry in the Twin Cities are women. They do the work, but haven’t benefitted from the industry’s huge profitability, Rykunyk told the Women’s Press.

‘Upper management positions are earning enormous salaries, yet these same people say that the women who clean the hotel should live in poverty,’ she said.

The Women’s Press praised Rykunyk’s vision and her hard work, epitomized by 14-hour workdays. Her response: ‘I’ve given my heart and soul to this work. There isn’t any going back.’
