A number of Minnesota unions have posted memorials to U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone on their websites, remembering his service to the working people of the state.
Some memorials are simple tributes. United Steelworkers of America Local 2705, which represents workers at Hibbing Taconite, has a photo of Wellstone at a recent Steelworker rally and above it the words, 'Thanks, Paul.'
Others recall in detail the work Wellstone did during his 12 years in the U.S. Senate.
'He was the best friend that AFSCME had in the United States Senate and supported us and the issues that affected working families,' the AFSCME Local 34 website states. 'He was passionate about representing the people of Minnesota.'
The sites also make some very personal connections between the labor movement and the eight people who died in the plane crash Oct. 25.
Minneapolis Federation of Teachers Local 59 notes the service of Marcia Wellstone Markuson as a public school teacher. 'Paul, Sheila and Marcia, we cannot say how much you will be missed,' the website states. 'Your integrity, compassion and courage are the models we admire and teach.'
Captain Richard Conroy, the pilot on the flight, was a former dialysis nurse, the Minnesota Nurses Association said, and is survived by his wife, Johanne, a registered nurse. 'MNA's membership and nursing uniquely grieves the loss . . .' the union's website says.
CWA Local 7250's website carries photos of one of Wellstone's last public appearances, on the Wednesday night before his death, at the CWA hall in Minneapolis.
