Several Labor Day celebrations will take place this weekend around the state.
Northeast Minnesota
At 11 a.m. Monday, one of the longest-running Labor Day parades in the nation gets under way in Cloquet, Minn., starting on Cloquet Avenue near the Sappi plant.
It will be followed by a picnic from noon to 2 p.m. at the Labor Temple, 1403 Avenue C, and a carnival from noon to 5 p.m. at Pinehurst Park. The carnival features a petting zoo, inflatable amusements, face painting, games, folk singing and more.
The Carlton County Labor Day Celebration also features an 8:30 a.m. run to benefit Blue House Orphanage (more information at hopemultipurpose.org) and a Classic Car Show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Avenue C between 12th and 14th.
The Iron Range Labor Assembly will commemorate Labor Day with a celebration from noon to 4 p.m. in Olcott Park in Virginia. It will include free food and live music, as well as a program of speeches by elected officials and candidates.
In Duluth, the Labor Day picnic will run from noon to 4 p.m. Free food, beverages and children’s activities will be featured.
Twin Cities
Fifth District U.S. Congressman Keith Ellison invites labor union members and their families to his annual “BBQ Honoring Labor,” planned Sunday, Sept. 4, from noon to 2 p.m. The free event will feature food, music, and speakers.
It takes place at Wabun Picnic Area C at Minnehaha Falls Regional Park, 4655 46th Ave. S. (the entrance is located just past Minnehaha Falls when heading north on the parkway). The Ellison campaign will provide burgers, hot dogs, and a vegetarian option, but asks your help with a side dish to share. The campaign also will be holding a food drive for Second Harvest Heartland at the BBQ, so bring a non-perishable food item to contribute.
On Labor Day, the St. Paul Regional Labor Federation is coordinating a march by union members in the daily parade at the Minnesota State Fair. The parade starts at 2 p.m. and winds through the fairgrounds. Visitors also are encouraged to check out the Minnesota AFL-CIO Labor Pavilion at the fair.
