Unions team up for rally in downtown Minneapolis

Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Local 17 and Teamsters Local 120 plan a joint demonstration Tuesday, Jan. 21. The unions and their supporters expect to rally at noon at the Federal Building plaza before marching through downtown.

Organizers said the rally will honor the memory of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as well as support Minneapolis workers who are seeking to exercise their rights.

The joint event will be in support of workers who have gone more than two years without a contract at the Grand Hotel Minneapolis, and 400 workers who are trying to unionize at 25 parking ramps and lots in downtown Minneapolis managed by Municipal Parking Inc.

Local 17 also continues informational picketing throughout the month at the Grand Hotel. Negotiation sessions – the first in nearly three months – were scheduled for Jan. 6 and 23.
