Vote Tuesday in local elections across Minnesota for mayor, city council, school board, school levies and other races. Most polling places will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. To find out what offices and issues will be on the ballot in your area, go to the Minnesota Secretary of State’s website.
In Minneapolis, voters will choose all 13 City Council members, the Mayor and all nine Park Board Commissioners. In St. Paul, voters will choose the next Mayor and three School Board members.
School levies will be up for a vote in Anoka-Hennepin – the state’s largest district – and numerous other districts.
Races in Minneapolis and St. Paul will feature “ranked choice voting,” allowing voters to rank their first, second and third choices. This process eliminated the need for a primary election.
The ballot will include three columns, marked clearly at the top 1, 2 and 3. By filling in ovals on the ballot, voters will choose their first, second and third choices. Voters do not need to vote for a second or third choice. But, if they do, all choices must be different.
If no candidate receives a majority of the first choice votes, then a process begins to count voters’ second or third choices to determine the winner.
