Wobblies’ 100th birthday commemorated with readings, tour

The 100th birthday of the Wobblies, the labor organization advocating “one big union” for all workers, will be commemorated with readings and a history tour.

On Thursday, May 12, three noted historians will discuss “The Wobblies in Print” at 7 p.m. at Hamline Midway Library, 1558 W. Minnehaha Ave., St. Paul. Scholars David Roediger, Peter Rachleff and Sal Salerno will read from their work and other publications on the Wobblies, whose official name was the Industrial Workers of the World.

On Sunday, May 15, labor leader and historian Dave Riehle will lead a tour of Wobbly sites in the Twin Cities, including the former Skid Row, Mill District and Elliot Park. A bus leaves at 2 p.m. from Highland Park Library, 1974 Ford Parkway. Please call The Friends at 651-222-3242 to reserve a seat on the bus.

Both programs are free and open to the public. They are part of the “Untold Stories” series, commemorating labor history month, that is sponsored by The Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library and co-sponsored by several labor organizations.
