Workday Minnesota reporting from Pittsburgh

Workday editor Barb Kucera, Minneapolis Labor Review editor Steve Share and University of Minnesota Labor Education Service Director Howard Kling are attending the national AFL-CIO convention.

The AFL-CIO is holding its first national convention in four years — and the first since 2005 when several unions split to form another labor federation, Change to Win. For the first time in 14 years, delegates will elect a new leadership team for the AFL-CIO, placing Mine Worker Richard Trumka in the presidency to replace John Sweeney, who is retiring.

But it\’s the challenges facing working people — especially the struggles of families across the country — that will dominate discussion as union members in construction, education, government, manufacturing, transportation and other industries meet for the five-day event at the Pittsburgh Convention Center.

The convention takes place as Pittsburgh prepares to host a meeting of the G20 — the world\’s most powerful nations — for discussions on the future of the global economy. Pittsburgh will be showcased as an example of the success of the "new economy," but local labor and community leaders say this so-called progress has left many people behind.

While in Pittsburgh, Minnesota labor communicators have joined colleagues from labor media in other states to fan out across the region and report on what working people are experiencing. Click on these links to view stories posted on the International Labor Communications Association website:
