Workers Memorial Day observances call attention to workplace safety

?Good Jobs, Safe Jobs, Protect Workers Now? is the theme of this year’s Workers Memorial Day, which remembers those killed and injured on the job and promotes workplace safety.

Observances will be held across the country, including several in Minnesota. Although the Minnesota Department of Transportation cancelled its annual Workers Memorial Day observance, the Metro District will hold its own event Thursday, April 28, at 1:30 p.m. at the district headquarters, 1500 W. County Road B2 in Roseville.

The event was organized at the instigation of staff and the AFSCME locals representing the workers, the district said. The focus will be “Workers Memorial Day: Pay Attention or Pay the Price,” MNDOT’s program to promote safe driving in highway construction zones.

In addition to the headquarters ceremony, each of the district’s 29 group areas will place a chair in a common area, containing a yellow hardhat and the name of one of the 29 state employees who have lost their lives on the job, the district said.

On Monday, the Duluth AFL-CIO Central Labor Body held a Solidarity Breakfast, followed by a tree planting at the Duluth Labor Temple. Among those who were remembered at the ceremony were teacher Neva Rogers and security guard Derrick Brun, who were killed in the March 21 shootings at Red Lake High School.

The Southern Dakota County Central Labor Council will hold a ceremony at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 27, in Lebanon Cemetery, Pilot Knob Road and County Road 42, Apple Valley.

On April 29, the Minnesota Building and Construction Trades Council will hold a ceremony at 11:50 a.m. at the Shaw-Lundquist construction site for the Orville Freeman building, Cedar Ave. north of Interstate 94, St. Paul.

Each year, nearly 6,000 people are killed at work and another 50,000 die from occupational diseases, according to government statistics. Millions more are injured on the job. Foreign-born workers, especially Latinos, are especially at risk and experience a disproportionate number of work-related fatalities, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The Bush administration?s fiscal year (FY) 2006 budget will make matters worse. It proposes to eliminate all funding for worker safety training programs?$10 million appropriated by Congress in FY 2005.

Workers Memorial Day is commemorated every year on April 28, the anniversary of the creation of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
