Workers Memorial Day remembers those killed, injured on the job

Every day in the United States, an average of 16 workers are fatally injured on the job. Every day, more than 11,000 are injured. Those numbers don’t include workers who contract fatal diseases from exposure to chemicals or other harmful substances at work.

All those workers will be remembered ? and their co-workers will call for stronger workplace safety ? on April 28, Workers Memorial Day. Across the nation, unions and other organizations will conduct events. In Minnesota, they include:

? Rally 10:30 a.m., April 28, State Capitol, lower stairs leading from the Capitol building to the mall. Sponsored by Machinists Local Lodge 1833.
? Ceremony Noon, April 28, Cobalt Building construction site, Central Ave. between University and 4th St. in Minneapolis. Sponsored by Minnesota Building and Construction Trades Council.
? Program 1 p.m., April 28, Waters Edge, 1500 W. County Road B2, Roseville. Sponsored by AFSCME Council 5 and MnDOT Metro Division.
? Ceremony 6:30 p.m., April 28, Lebanon Cemetery, Pilot Knob Road and County Road 42, Apple Valley. Sponsored by Southern Dakota County Labor Council.
? Ceremony 8:30 a.m., April 28, Basement East and West Conference Rooms MN DOT Offices, 2900 48th Street NW, Rochester. Sponsored by MN DOT, the Southeast Central Labor Council and the Southeast Minnesota Building and Construction Trades Council.

St.Cloud mayor Dave Kleis and Rochester mayor Ardell Brede have declared April 28th Workers Memorial Day in their respecive cities.

In Minnesota, 80 workers suffered fatal injuries in 2004, the latest year for which complete statistics are available. That was eight more deaths than in 2003, but in line with averages from the previous 10 years.

Nationally, 56,703 workers were killed on the job in 2004. That’s the second year in a row workplace deaths have increased ? after declining for five straight years.
