Building service workers for a private contractor at the federal government's Whipple Building at Fort Snelling voted 6-0 in a National Labor Relations Board election to join Local 70 of the International Union of Operating Engineers.
"We got a call from one of (the workers) wanting to inquire about the union," said Marianne Yernberg, Local 70 business representative. "They're not able to retain workers under their current wage rate and benefit package."
The contractor is CNV Services. "The employer was extremely cooperative," Yernberg said. "He's real interested in doing better for these folks."
