A delegation of religious leaders, ex-Supervalu workers and union members will attend the Supervalu shareholders meeting May 29 at the Minneapolis Convention Center to ask the Board of Directors to stop anti-worker conduct at Supervalu owned bigg's stores in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The delegation will conduct informational picketing and handbilling in front of the convention center starting at 9:30 a.m. Thursday.
Many from the delegation attended the shareholders meeting two years ago in Minneapolis and were led to believe the Board of Directors had real concern about the actions of bigg's President Pierre Wevers, they said.
Bill Dudley, director of strategic operations for UFCW Local 1099 in Cincinnati, said, "The Board of Directors and shareholders need to understand bigg's management is spending a considerable amount of time, effort and money fighting their workers who want union representation instead of preparing for the emergence of Wal-Mart Supercenters. Supervalu doesn't fire workers in this community who support their union and they shouldn't fire workers in our community who stand-up for their rights."
Sister Monica McGloin, chairperson for the Cincinnati Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice stated, "We just want to see bigg's workers in our community treated the same as other Supervalu workers and that's just not happening. Last year, CEO Noddle told us all Supervalu workers are treated the same. Maybe Mr. Noddle should visit our community where bigg's workers are threatened with arrest and fired for trying to organize a union."
A hearing before an Administrative Law Judge is being held at the National Labor Relations Board in Cincinnati, Ohio, on charges that management at Supervalu owned bigg's has interrogated, suspended and terminated union supporters in violation of U.S. Labor Laws.
