Workers vote to keep union at Dakota Premium

Workers voted by a more than two-to-one margin to keep their union, Local 789 said.

"The message was clear that workers wanted a voice at work and that voice will continue to be Local 789 United Food & Commercial Workers Union," said Local 789 President Don Seaquist, in a statement released by the union.

"Local 789 UFCW hopes the election will send a message to the company to sit down and bargain a good contract for its workers," the statement noted.

Since they organized five years ago, workers have had difficulty in getting management to participate in contract talks. The first negotiations took two years. The last contract expired July 1, 2007. The workers and union have held rallies and engaged community support to try to win a fair agreement.
